Every website word you might bump into, explained the way we wish someone had explained it to us. No jargon, no showing off, just plain English.
- Domain
- Your web address, like yourbusiness.com. It is the thing people type to find you, and it should always be registered in an account you control.
- Hosting
- The service that keeps your website switched on and visible to the world. Think of it as the space your site lives in so people can visit it any time.
- Plugin
- A little add-on bolted onto a WordPress site to give it an extra feature, like a contact form or a gallery. Handy, but every one is another thing to keep updated and another possible way in for trouble.
- Static site
- A website that is already finished and ready to show, rather than being built from scratch on every single visit. That is why static sites are so fast and have so little that can break.
- WordPress
- A popular system for building websites that powers a huge share of the web. It is powerful, but it leans on lots of add-ons, which is where most of the slowness and security worries come from.
- SSL / the padlock
- The little padlock icon in the address bar. It means the connection between a visitor and your site is private and secure. Every site we build has it, always.
- Core Web Vitals
- Google's plain scorecard for how fast, steady, and pleasant your site feels to use. Sites that score well tend to get recommended more; slow, clunky ones get skipped.
- Database
- A filing system a website uses to store and fetch its content on the fly. WordPress needs one, which adds work on every visit. Our static sites do not use one at all.
- Backup
- A safe, spare copy of your website, kept so that if anything ever goes wrong, your site can be restored. We keep backups so nothing is ever truly lost.
- CDN
- The fast network your site lives on. Instead of your site sitting in one place, copies are kept close to your visitors so pages load quickly no matter where they are.
